Ryan Tannehill went down with a knee injury at practice this morning and Dolphins fans spent all day glued to the internet, praying for the best. While they waited to hear his fate (Which turned out to be very encouraging), a discussion arose about who the Dolphins should sign if Tannehill's injury proved to be severe, and a few names came up including retired double-chin Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick.<br />
<br />
I want to say right off the bat that this article is taking no stance on Colin Kaepernick's political leanings or statements. I assume you care as much about my politics as I do about yours, which is not at all. On paper, Kaepernick's numbers from last season look pretty impressive, but any arguments people want to make about his football skills, or his effect on a locker room are all fair game to me. What I have no patience for are arguments about his politics. Articles including <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/why-jay-cutler-makes-more-sense-than-colin-kaepernick-if-dolphins-need-a-qb/" target="_blank">this one</a> have stated that the Dolphins cannot or should not sign him at least in part because of his politics, which is utterly ridiculous.<br />
<br />
I totally get that Kaepernick's political statements, particularly some of his stances on Cuba and Fidel Castro rubbed a lot of South Floridians the wrong way. Many of you passionately disagree with him as you have every right to, but you may be surprised to know the Dolphins already have a number of players with beliefs that may differ from your own. In addition to the Dolphins players who kneeled during the national anthem last season, we also now have William Hayes, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wRBIxayDg8&list=" target="_blank">a player who publicly denies the existence of dinosaurs and believes in mermaids</a>.<br />
<br />
Does this bother you? Do you want these players cut immediately? How about crimes? Have you loudly demanded every Dolphin get cut the moment they're arrested for domestic violence or other crimes over the years? If not, why not?<br />
<br />
<h3>
What I hate more than anything in the world is the repulsive sound of the deadbeat dads that make up the New York Jets fanbase cheering when they beat our team. I hate Tom Brady's smug grin when he torches us for another win. If there's a player out there who has the skill to prevent that who you wouldn't sign simply because of their political beliefs, you can go fuck yourself. We have nothing in common. For me, there are literally no exceptions to this. If I found out white supremacist Richard Spencer had an amazing arm, I'd sign him today.</h3>
<div>
<br />
In a perfect world, we could all cheer for a team of talented Pro Bowlers that are all perfect pillars of the community and in total lockstep with all of our beliefs. The real world often offers more complex choices. While some players might fit that description for you, like Jason Taylor or Zach Thomas, we also live in the world of Richie Incognito. Aside from the tapes that came out during the overblown "Bullygate" bullshit a few years ago, I've heard very few people describe him as anything other than an asshole. I would not want to hang out with him under any circumstances, but I was still furious when we cut him because he was pretty good at football. While our guards have at times been like turnstiles the last few seasons, Incognito went to 2 consecutive Pro Bowls.<br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
If you either wouldn't sign the best player available simply because of politics, or you're one of the pussies who stopped watching football last season simply because players were making a political statement you disagreed with, you need to accept that you're the easily triggered snowflake in need of a safe space.</h3>

I started writing this site during our 2007 1-15 season and so far this season has been even harder to watch.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In 2007, we had a coach too nice to be effective, a leaky offensive line that allowed too many sacks, a defense that couldn't tackle and a recently signed overpaid defensive free agent who was underperforming (Joey Porter). Sounds familiar so far, but there is one gigantic difference. While the 2007 Dolphins had a lack of talent due to injuries and poor personnel decisions, I never questioned that they were playing their hardest. Every week, Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor and the other players went out and played to best of their abilities against teams who were often more talented. While it was frustrating to watch Randy Moss stitch a clown suit on Cameron Worrell, I never felt like Worrell was phoning it in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This season I see a team most people would agree is more talented than the '07 squad, that with a few exceptions (Jarvis Landry, Reshad Jones and a few others) is sleepwalking through games with very little passion. A lot of the fault lies with coaching and with Philbin out, there is hope that might change but I need to see more passion out of this team. I would rather have a less talented team playing their hearts out than a talented team that doesn't care.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<b>We Need to Sign Miko Grimes</b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTjDU78skZH3l0QGYwcxvid_g-37FZTekgJGWFg7be2C_spolTiBZV8Lr4JgkcuZYDLw4VoiAfaWFhdQtbC8Jm9sxyoa93-ah6OGMQypFnifRhYzPm9YArPV2sBum3NptP1lWIAIsZOzA/s1600/Miko.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTjDU78skZH3l0QGYwcxvid_g-37FZTekgJGWFg7be2C_spolTiBZV8Lr4JgkcuZYDLw4VoiAfaWFhdQtbC8Jm9sxyoa93-ah6OGMQypFnifRhYzPm9YArPV2sBum3NptP1lWIAIsZOzA/s320/Miko.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So far this season, aside from Jarvis Landry the person in a Dolphins jersey who has best embodied the kind of tenacity and grit I'm talking about was Miko Grimes. After the game, Miko bravely took on multiple police officers in a show of passion and raw athleticism rarely seen from Dolphins players this season that included headbutting an officer while she was handcuffed. While our society unfortunately has laws that frown on that kind of violence in a parking lot, on a football field those are the exact kind of psychotic impulses that get players to the Pro Bowl.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/DBJGmBP94UI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DBJGmBP94UI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With Miko recently getting fired from her radio gig, she's available and she already has plenty of Dolphins jerseys with her last name on them so all we'd have to do is change the numbers. If she's willing to fight that hard just to get into a restricted area, imagine what a terror she could be against opposing running backs. </div>
<div>

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2501545867231674250.post-5680547905725269922015-10-05T17:40:00.005-04:002015-10-05T18:54:05.541-04:00Adios, Joe PhilbinJoe Philbin just got a lot more time to pick up gum wrappers. Today, Stephen Ross continued his habit of only firing people at least a year after everyone else on the planet knew they needed to go.
<br />
<br />
Philbin is a nice guy but unfortunately the NFL awards no points for friendliness or having a tidy practice field. He was a weak leader and as a result, during his tenure anyone with a strong personality was quickly shown the door. When he first became head coach, he said he didn't believe in having team captains, but after Chad Johnson was released the players formed what they called a "leadership council" of four players to represent the voice of the locker room. The next offseason, all four of those players (Karlos Dansby, Jake Long, Reggie Bush, and Davone Bess) were let go.
<br />
<br />
Philbin's fear of any players with leadership created a power vacuum that contributed to the 2013 Bullygate scandal. While the Ted Wells report may have exonerated Philbin as being totally unaware of any of the Bullygate events, it convicted him of being totally out of touch with what was going on in his own locker room. He seemed like the overmatched substitute teacher, helplessly asking who threw the paper while his back was turned.
In a million different ways, it was clear the players never respected Philbin. Whether it was constantly leaking negative things to the media or Mike Wallace directly confronting him during a game, he clearly never had any command of that locker room. For the past two seasons in a row, the Dolphins quit on Philbin at the end of the season with the playoffs on the line.<br />
<br />
With Philbin gone, the Dolphins are left with a team that has some talent, but hardly any leadership. Many of our top paid players like Suh, Wake and Grimes have never been vocal leaders and that's unlikely to change. There are also reports today that Ryan Tannehill recently feuded with the practice squad telling them "Enjoy your practice squad paychecks." when they were intercepting him too much which doesn't inspire much hope for him emerging as a leader in the future. Dan Campbell has his work cut out for him. Everyone said this game would show us where we were at as a team and unfortunately it did.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
Now on to the horrible team from New Jersey. If you're new to the site, you should know I'm not fond of the Jets and because we're playing them next Monday, it's time for another entry in the exciting series:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizA6YVP5WI7bvbZaatCZP7WbSgc-2FZ_CFa5Bdo-CY_8iZ0EN8nKEIc44s0YSvLUHoo_azjBHHEoLG-H6Pc9x_ieGGqgOMAw8foX0juNgX7PV4pSQkY1JENVkAlEh2BW5yZJYSsjuKq8k/s1600/Get+to+Hate+a+jet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizA6YVP5WI7bvbZaatCZP7WbSgc-2FZ_CFa5Bdo-CY_8iZ0EN8nKEIc44s0YSvLUHoo_azjBHHEoLG-H6Pc9x_ieGGqgOMAw8foX0juNgX7PV4pSQkY1JENVkAlEh2BW5yZJYSsjuKq8k/s1600/Get+to+Hate+a+jet.jpg" height="114" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
Why hate the Jets as a group when you can hate them individually? That's why I started this series so we can give the Jets the specific, personalized hatred they deserve. Previous entries have included <a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/04/get-to-hate-jet-tim-tebow.html">Tim Tebow</a> and <a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/06/get-to-hate-jet-fathers-day-edition.html">Antonio Cromartie</a>. Who is the target this week?</div>

<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
As you might of heard, the starting quarterback for the Jets next Monday (Assuming God doesn't finally answer my prayers and kill the whole team in a fire before then) will be Michael Vick. I know right now you're thinking "But what could we possibly hate about Michael Vick? He seems so nice. Is he a litterbug? Does he leech off his neighbor's WiFi?". I admit that it was a real challenge to come up with negative things to dislike about him, but as a dedicated journalist I felt it was my duty to try my best. For the sake of simplicity, I've decided to just focus on the one terrible thing he's done that we're all aware of.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>
He's a Player on the Jets</b></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Michael Vick committing his most unforgivable act</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Of all the things Vick has done, choosing to sign with the Jets is easily the most abhorrent. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't want to hear any excuses for him, either. I've read plenty of articles about how him signing with the Jets was a "cultural thing" and all the people around him "pressured him into doing it", but as adults we are each responsible for our own actions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've also heard other people saying that I should forgive him because he signed with them all the way back in March, and surely he now regrets it. He only regrets it now that he is dealing with the repercussions (A 2-9 record). I think committing an act that heinous shows something about his character. If he's morally capable of signing with the Jets, what other horrendous things is he capable of. What kind of monster does something like that with no emotion.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would like to see Vick fully apologize and also speak out at schools and other events to explain the dangers of the terrible thing he did so the vicious cycle doesn't repeat. It would be a good step to show he understands what he did was wrong.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

While it wasn't a perfect game by any means, in Kyle Orton the Dolphins finally found a mediocre Bills QB they could stop after falling to EJ Manual this season and Thad Lewis twice last year.<br />
<br />
Once again, we had a slow start on offense before turning it on in the second half. We are currently 25th in the NFL in first half scoring (9 points) and 1st in the NFL in second half scoring (15.9 points). This leads me to a huge way the Dolphins can improve their team.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<b>The Dolphins Need to Drop the Miami Habit of Showing Up Late</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
There's a huge list of positive things that have come from South Florida culture (Pollo Tropical, Cuban Coffee and Trick Daddy to name a few) but one bad South Florida habit has taken hold of the Miami Dolphins this season and that is the habit of showing up late. For a city built on cocaine, Miami as a city is surprisingly laid-back. Starting times for events are often taken as suggestions. Watch any Miami sporting event and you'll see a lot of fans arriving a half hour into the game (or for the Florida Panthers, not at all). While you may think showing up late makes you look cool, in the NFL it makes your team look incompetent and unprepared.<br />
<br />
I'm obviously not the first person to point this out. When your team averages more points in the 3rd quarter (11.3) than they do in the first half combined (9), that is going to draw some attention. While some try to suggest it shows that they are making smart half-time adjustments, it makes you wonder why the entire week of film study and practice they had leading up to the first half didn't lead to a better showing. If we are going to have any chance against high-scoring offenses like Denver next week, we are going to need 4 quarters of play. So Miami Dolphins, by all means keep the Publix subs, the sandals, and the Cuban sandwiches but please stop showing up late.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2501545867231674250.post-61163125715407169822014-11-10T19:41:00.002-05:002014-11-10T20:38:40.337-05:00Put Our Best Players in Cryosleep<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brent Grimes on Ice</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I've never had to watch a child of mine die right in front of me, but if I do I can at least be comforted knowing I've already seen something more painful. Twice this year the Dolphins have had the lead in the waning moments, only to watch an NFC North team plow down the field with ease and score last-second touchdowns. It feels the way the final fight in Karate Kid must have felt for the parents of the Cobra Kai. <br>
<br>
Obviously in both games, we made a number of good plays and both the Packers and Lions are great teams so it's tempting to try to see them as the kind of "moral victories" that mediocre teams like ours thrive on. Since our last playoff appearance in 2008, we've hovered between 6-10 and 8-8, the kind of mediocrity that keeps you both out of the the playoffs and out of position to get elite draft picks (Not that Jeff Ireland would have done much with them anyway. ::cough:: Dion Jordan,)<br>
<br>
To add injury to insult we also found out we've lost Brandon Albert for the season. Even with him, it seemed unlikely we could take the next step to be elite and things definitely haven't gotten any easier.<br>
<br>
It's especially frustrating because some players on our team are playing out of their minds. That Brent Grimes pick was one of the coolest plays I've seen in a while and Cameron Wake has been a beast all season. The problem is that those players are 31 and 32 respectively. If we ever put a team on the field good enough to make a real run at a Super Bowl, what are the odds they'll be young enough to be part of it? That's when I got an idea that may or may not have been influenced by me seeing <i>Interstellar</i>.<br>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Locker Room of the Future</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
Since our last Super Bowl win (It's been a while), we've had a lot of great players, just never enough of them at one time. We've had Pro Bowlers at almost every position, just never enough on the field to get us to the promised land. At the same time, we often do well enough to not be in position to get elite draft picks.<br>
<br>
My plan is to put our best players in cryosleep to preserve them until we have enough talent to be an actual threat to win the Super Bowl at which time we will thaw them out.<br>
<br>
Of the players on our current team, I'd probably go with:<br>
Cameron Wake<br>
Brent Grimes<br>
Mike Wallace<br>
Olivier Vernon<br>
Mike Pouncey<br>
Ja'Wuan James<br>
and I'm strongly considering Jarvis Landry.<br>
<br>
I'm not entirely sure how much cryosleep costs so I may add more players if it's cost effective. Yes I know the technology doesn't technically exist yet, but how hard could it be. I'm sure Stephen Ross has the cash to make it happen.<br>
<br>
<h3>
It also has tons of advantages:</h3>
<h3>
1. Preserve Talent</h3>
For too long, we've had to sit by and watch as talented players on our team aged and got hurt with no supporting cast to get them to the next level. We had one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time with no running game or defense. We had Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas in their prime with no offense to put points on the board. If we had started this plan last week, we'd have an elite left tackle with 2 healthy knees waiting for us on ice.<br>
<br>
<h3>
2. Their Contracts Won't Be So Overinflated in the Future</h3>
While some of our players are a bit overpaid in today's dollars, by the time we need them, inflation will have made their contracts much more reasonable. Mike Wallace is probably a bargain in 2043 dollars.<br>
<br>
<h3>
3. Better Draft Picks</h3>
While our most talented players are in the freezer, we'll be racking up top draft picks who we can also freeze if they turn out to be decent players. If we draft the way we have for the last few years, we should have an elite team in just 20 or 30 short years.<br>
<br>
I'm sure the players union is probably going to bitch about how this plan somehow "infringes on player's rights" and shows that we are "depraved monsters" who only care about winning, but progress always has it's speed bumps. Besides, basic human decency is a small price to pay for a team that can finish a game in the 4th quarter.<br>

The Miami Dolphins have a major problem with bullying. So far this season, one of their players has been forcefully thrown down to the ground 35 times and hit countless more. These attacks have left him physically hurting and bruised and who knows how that is effecting him emotionally. The Dolphins appointed 5 guys to try to protect him, but apparently they have been too busy calling each other names and playing dumb pranks to do any good. Now one of those "protectors" has been sent away for bad behavior, leaving Ryan Tannehill vulnerable to even more bullying. This needs to stop:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFtcYFgfCFqUpCQfYWAK7z1EDYEhnbAWoVhI602LLyUC_LxBnq5WntKUgRzIATSL33Xmne67E45Q3GEntWymQX3AOT24yqf2O5WgZ6uEzlzvhVXOueASjH_HyQZZXtrV8PjBUwEwAuNkM/s1600/Come+on.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFtcYFgfCFqUpCQfYWAK7z1EDYEhnbAWoVhI602LLyUC_LxBnq5WntKUgRzIATSL33Xmne67E45Q3GEntWymQX3AOT24yqf2O5WgZ6uEzlzvhVXOueASjH_HyQZZXtrV8PjBUwEwAuNkM/s320/Come+on.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Come on</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
The NFL Needs to Stop the Bullying of Ryan Tannehill</h2>
The NFL needs to step in and do something about this. This means doing several things:<br />
<h3>
1. Get Tannehill Some Protection</h3>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPk7xPA8-_g3NUywRa5jMbSZAVTfu7L4xuFPXx7Mm1Rf1dRiGUyWZUDSny_CAMXOTWQQqqRgenbwJ4AXXZOJSYJ8fvct7OShp_k6qilH-xSnWk1e2oEdNOdCArHWOmJhkFkLnX84FlqeE/s1600/Safe+Tannehill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPk7xPA8-_g3NUywRa5jMbSZAVTfu7L4xuFPXx7Mm1Rf1dRiGUyWZUDSny_CAMXOTWQQqqRgenbwJ4AXXZOJSYJ8fvct7OShp_k6qilH-xSnWk1e2oEdNOdCArHWOmJhkFkLnX84FlqeE/s320/Safe+Tannehill.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tannehill needs some muscle.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
For starters, Ryan Tannehill needs 24 hour bodyguards to follow him both on and off the field to make sure people stop assaulting him. The NFL should be in charge of finding these bodyguards because Jeff Ireland has clearly shown he does not possess the skills to find people to protect Tannehill from bullying who can do the job compently without commiting hate crimes.<br />
<br />
<h3>
2. Opposing Defenses Need Sensitivity Training </h3>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu5di0cB6OEYW4onSe3lyEd-_kbdfKImh61JtIN-beJ9F1UZ7qhVgNk0pm24i4PkiioT9x5Kp0cNHUjdycfMBp5iALd7wav-nKI5IBMIG5m36-zS4_IrEguA6t-a5o9-KelkhHXDnOVAo/s1600/Console.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu5di0cB6OEYW4onSe3lyEd-_kbdfKImh61JtIN-beJ9F1UZ7qhVgNk0pm24i4PkiioT9x5Kp0cNHUjdycfMBp5iALd7wav-nKI5IBMIG5m36-zS4_IrEguA6t-a5o9-KelkhHXDnOVAo/s320/Console.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tannehill is consoled after a beating</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Opposing defenses need to be given sensitivity training to teach them how their violence makes the players on offense feel.<br />
<br />
<h3>
3. Fire Jeff Ireland</h3>
This has nothing to do with Ryan Tannehill or bullying, but it's way overdue. If Stephen Ross can't do it, the NFL should.<br />

Given how good the Dolphins are about keeping things quiet (Interest in Mike Wallace, Manning, Harbaugh... there is no point in even going on. Suffice to say they leak everything) it was not surprising to find out the new logo leaked a month early and the Dolphins officials have now confirmed it.<br />
<br />
Before I go into how I feel about the logo, let's take a stroll down memory lane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx1a_EUY_dy36-1dYDKtswa1ouIW-N6aqXFX0JZhyphenhyphenH6qxeD_n06JbtMIgmt2MvxDZtf29rPCpejU-2zZYA6ogMOm8zmfCxoLzfsEpCExWEVr6mo7tjPmWUCBenKu0HhtGXLWjW8D_duNY/s1600/Logo+History.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx1a_EUY_dy36-1dYDKtswa1ouIW-N6aqXFX0JZhyphenhyphenH6qxeD_n06JbtMIgmt2MvxDZtf29rPCpejU-2zZYA6ogMOm8zmfCxoLzfsEpCExWEVr6mo7tjPmWUCBenKu0HhtGXLWjW8D_duNY/s640/Logo+History.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've always lumped the first three logos together, because they are all pretty much the same. This was the logo I grew up with since I moved to South Florida in 1992 (3rd Grade).This logo with a dolphin wearing a logo is kind of silly, but having a dolphin as a mascot in general is also kind of silly. The whole logo and color scheme was all a little silly, but to me it always represented the weirdness of South Florida. South Florida is an incredibly weird place and if you grew up there like I did, you don't really fully appreciate how weird until you leave. If you haven't noticed from reading this blog, I am also very weird and I love South Florida in all it's weirdness. To me, that logo was a perfect representation of the city it represented.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sadly, all of this goodness came to an end in 1997. I'm not going to lie and say I know anything about the history of what led to the decision to change the logo, but I do remember what 1997 was like. 1997 was a year when everything was getting obnoxiously more "extreme". Surge soda was on the shelves, X-Games was on the TV, The Prodigy was on the radio and every company in America was asking "How can we make our oatmeal seem more extreme?". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In 1997, someone in Davie got the bright idea to change the logo from what it had been since 1966 to the strangely pissed off cartoon dolphin it's been ever since. This was a dolphin and he still had a sunburst around him, but now he had an an extreme attitude. He was still wearing a helmet, but probably just because they required it at the skatepark when he stopped by to lay down some 900s. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you choose a dolphin as your mascot and you choose team colors of aqua and orange, you are accepting that any intimidation your team has will have to be established on the field through their play. Much like Jaws ruined the reputations of all non-dangerous sharks, so too did Flipper ruin the street cred of all the tough badass dolphins. Dolphins can be scary animals.<a href="http://youtu.be/HvV0mmEPIZw"> I even have a joke about how they can commit the act of rape (It's the last joke in the video)</a>, but try as you might, people will never accept dolphins as scary animals. That was always my biggest problem with that logo was that by changing the logo to this "scarier" dolphin, it seemed like the Dolphins were trying to be something they weren't. Whether it's your fat friend buying skinny jeans or your dad deciding to become a biker and get his first tattoo in his late 40's, there is something painfully unappealing about someone trying to be something they're not.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This terrible logo is one of the reasons I have given hundreds of dollars to Mitchell & Ness so I can wear Dolphins apparel with the old logo instead of the 1997 one. Obviously I have a ton of stuff including jerseys with the newer logo (I just got a Tannehill jersey a couple months ago. Damn you Dolphins for changing the logo now!), but I never really liked it as much as I preferred the original. In fact, the whole reason I made my logo for this site the way I did was to parody that logo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So given that backdrop, obviously I'm not all torn up that the Dolphins have decided to change the logo. There are a few things I like about the new logo. I like that the design is cleaner and that they did away with the dumb angry facial expression which is good. But where is the helmet? Is a dolphin without a helmet really that much less silly that one with a helmet? That is what bugs me the most about the new logo is that it is completely devoid of any character. While the last logo had character in a very bad way, the new logo has none at all. Even the pose of the dolphin seems to be meaningless. He's just swimming around, as if he didn't know they were going to take his photo or something. The last two logos were a dolphin swimming through a hoop, which dolphins do, except for this bland boring dolphin, he's just hanging out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To me, this new logo also represents the Dolphins again trying to be something they're not. It seems like they are trying to divorce themselves from this silliness inherent to having a football team with a dolphin mascot by sterilizing out all of the character. Having these colors and this mascot with a helmet is a little quirky and to some people it will always be a punchline. To me that quirkiness is something I've always loved about this team. When you walk around New York or any city for that matter, when you see people wearing Dolphins gear, it's because they actually love the team (Except for the rare hipster who may be wearing it to be ironic. God I hate those people...). It's not like the Yankees or Cowboys where you wear the hat because it happens to go with your outfit. The only thing aqua and orange matches with is more aqua and orange!!! And white... And grey. And maybe navy.. but not much else!!!! Obviously, those colors are staying the same, but I'm not crazy about them making the logo so sterile. I like my Dolphins logo the way I like my South Florida; a little bit weird.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
P.S. I also made this with the new logo. I'm not going to get into politics, but if you like this, awesome.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We have never beat the Texans a single time, which would be embarrassing even if they had a ton of playoff wins, instead of just one ever.<br />
<br />
The game actually had a promising start. We got up 3-0. Our defense was looking pretty solid. The running game with Reggie Bush seemed to be working. I even started to get "I told you they would be good" tweets from people. Then came the end of the second half. Interception. Interception. Fumble. Ballgame. The game was never close after that.<br />
<br />
If you did not watch the game and only saw the stat line, Ryan Tannehill played a bit better than his 39 passer rating and 3 interceptions suggest. He made a lot of tough throws, but as I'm sure you have heard by now, he had a bit of an issue with balls being tipped at the line.
For some reason, Tannehill, who is 6'4, had a hell of a time getting the ball over top the Texans D Line. They were able to get their hands on 6 passes at the line, 2 of which became interceptions. Watching the game, you would have thought Doug Flutie was out there trying to throw underhand over Shaquille O'Neal.<br />
<br />
If it was just this game, you could write it off, but he had 4 tipped balls against Carolina in the preseason and 19 last season in college, so this is kind of an issue.
The O-line needs to do a better job of engaging defenders and I'm sure Tannehill will get better at seeing throwing lanes better as he gets more experience, but this is an emergency and drastic times call for drastic measures.<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Ryan Tannehill Needs Stilts</span></b> </h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjJ6qxfn6giinCW3GRhfRaLiDidIXJJnHVZMoGm5s1VI-q5jVh7C3Wi9uhq3SN-0g970jmLndXwdnAZ7LfxahyphenhyphenwL5FMQGwupapGCBMsi08y3tKADJb9fGAP1FUArYY7-WPQDkVJOp3sQw/s1600/Stilts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjJ6qxfn6giinCW3GRhfRaLiDidIXJJnHVZMoGm5s1VI-q5jVh7C3Wi9uhq3SN-0g970jmLndXwdnAZ7LfxahyphenhyphenwL5FMQGwupapGCBMsi08y3tKADJb9fGAP1FUArYY7-WPQDkVJOp3sQw/s1600/Stilts.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Being 6'4 should be enough to allow you to throw the ball over a D line most of the time with no problems, but apparently that's not the case for Ryan Tannehill. If we want to see the ball consistently go more than 10 feet, he is gonna need a boost.
Maybe at 7'4 he can finally clear the D line to give our receivers a chance to drop some more passes.<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, drops are still a bit of an issue on our team. If only we had a beast of a receiver who could pull down 9 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown. It's too bad that guys like that are very rare to find, and our team sure as hell hasn't been finding anyone like that in the third round.<br />
<br />
With trading Brandon Marshall for next to nothing and Vontae Davis, this team has essentially thrown in the towel for this year, to try to build picks for next year. Even if Tannehill turns out to be a Hall of Famer, the GM who should be using those picks is sure as hell better not be named Jeff Ireland.
But I don't want to leave on a downer so here's a nerdy Dolphins poster. Enjoy.

Plus a podcast soon!I have been counting the minutes until the premiere of HBO Hard Knocks: The Miami Dolphins. I love that show enough that I have watched every episode in every season, including the seasons with the Chiefs and Bengals and they're finally doing my team! Will Tannehill emerge as the greatest Dolphins rookie QB since Dan Marino (Not a ton of competion)? Will Chad Johnson return to his former greatness? Will I already be sick of Lauren Tannehill before the end of the first episode? So many questions!! I'm going to be live-tweeting the premiere tonight @SavingThePhins if you want to check that out.<br />

Also I have a big announcement.<br />

Last week was the first real training camp, which is always prime time for knee-jerk reactions.<br />
<br />
Chad Ochocinco had a pretty good first camp, which means he's headed to a Pro Bowl!<br />
<br />
Ryan Tannehill struggled to adjust to the speed of the NFL game which means he is a bust!<br />
<br />
Reshad Jones and the defense dominated the offense so the defense will be good and the offense will be bad! Or they both will be good! Or they both will be bad!<br />
<br />
I am glued to Omar Kelly's twitter feed every day of camp, but before pads come on, it's tough to really know anything at this point. With that in mind, I will state the only 2 things I have really taken away from camp so far.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> <b>1. I Like Chad Ochocinco</b></span><br />
I think my recent post about him being crazy may have made it seem like I don't like him, but I do. How do you not love a guy who proposed to his girlfriend and then went right back to playing Call of Duty? If we had to trade big draft picks for him or if we were paying him huge money, his nuttiness might be a concern, but for the veteran minimum, we can just sit back and enjoy the show.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: x-large;">2. Joe Philbin Doesn't Yell</span></b><br />
I am not the first person to notice that Joe Philbin is not the yelling type, but he seems to have an almost supernatural calmness about things. To illustrate my point, below is a list of Google results. Keep in mind that Philbin's photo is the closest I could find to one of him yelling and he is probably just talking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSwknTXslVEJFYzQDv5JM08TPcVKIglhbVZRDsFzEZDIASTugtg3hZJQHU7-zIzQy825J9IeL3u8x2_nQLSFn_DGrRHQvMv9NfpsM2CnsLH0p_-AYstHIFDElClqC3WxxEnFdywj_F4bg/s1600/Yelling+Chart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSwknTXslVEJFYzQDv5JM08TPcVKIglhbVZRDsFzEZDIASTugtg3hZJQHU7-zIzQy825J9IeL3u8x2_nQLSFn_DGrRHQvMv9NfpsM2CnsLH0p_-AYstHIFDElClqC3WxxEnFdywj_F4bg/s1600/Yelling+Chart.jpg" /></a></div>
Obviously this isn't the most accurate way to gauge things, and I'm sure he has yelled at players before, but you get my point. When we had Cam Cameron, I wrote<a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/03/october-10-2007-cam-cameron-needs-to-be.html"> this post</a> about how he needed to be scarier. Cam arrived as an offensive guru who was able to generate a huge offense in San Diego with players much better than ours, but he was also a pushover and ultimately players like Joey Porter walked all over him.<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Obviously, yelling doesn't guarantee success. We just had a coach in Sparano who never stopped yelling. E</span>ventually, <span style="background-color: white;">the team went south and that yelling fell on deaf ears. But l</span><span style="background-color: white;">ook at the coaches of the top 4 teams last year: The Brothers Harbaugh, Coughlin and Belichick. Which of those is the soft-spoken nice guy? There are a handful of nice-guy coaches who are successful like Tony Dungy or Dick Vermeil, but there are way more successful guys who either yell, or in the case of Mike Tomlin, give looks scary enough that they don't have to.</span><br />
<br />
I hope Philbin is an offensive genius and this season is the beginning of a dynasty, but whether he succeeds or fails, people will say it's because of his demeanor. If he wins they'll say it's because of his ability to stay calm and if he fails they will say he wasn't tough enough on his players. Still, if he starts using phrases like "Fail Forward Fast", I'm gonna be nervous.<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Happy Father's Day everyone. I hope you've all taken time today to hang out with your dad or at least called to let him know that even though he's ill-tempered and emotionally absent, those mental scars have only made you into a more successful alcoholic. </div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
A little while ago I started a Get to Hate a Jet with <a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/04/get-to-hate-jet-tim-tebow.html">my post on Tim Tebow</a>, because I got tired of hating the Jets as a group and wanted to start hating them individually. So because it's Father's Day I've chosen a guy who is absolutely buried in Father's Day cards and macaroni art today.</div>

Cromartie currently has 10 kids by 8 different women and he is expecting twins in November his wife bringing the total to 12. To put that in perspective, if his kids start a football team, one of them would still have to sit on the bench. In the future, no one will be able to complete passes because his army of kids will be intercepting them all. How does he remember all those kids' names? Very slowly. This is him trying to name them in 2010 when he (only) had 8 kids. (I posted this video on a <a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/05/some-tips-to-help-miami-dolphins-look.html">Hard Knocks post</a> a couple weeks ago but it just feels especially appropriate for today).</div>

In his defense, that is a lot of kids and baby mamas to remember. Thankfully the <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/it_st_and_children_cAHiqjbppalBGBdCuBwGpM#ixzz1sIsrpzX9">New York Post</a> made a chart to help him/us keep track.<br />

<br />
These women have told a ton of stories to the Post that paint him as a less than ideal father. His ex-fiancee Rhonda Patterson, who he dumped a week before their $200,000 wedding and kicked out of their San Diego house while she was 6 months pregnant has said he only spent "a few hours" with their child since birth. While the Post isn't known for journalistic integrity and it's possible some of these women could be making some things up, it seems unlikely that that he is being a great dad to all 12 of these kids.<br />

Thankfully, he has settled down with his wife, Terricka Cason. Well, kind of. <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/baby_mama_jet_drama_8lC8tz8dIGQicakqIpkrML">Last month</a>, cops broke down 2 doors at their house responding to a 911 call Cromartie placed after she texted him:<br />
“God forgive me, I don’t want to die. What have I done?” and “I cut my wrists. I took those pills.”<br />
Police found no blood. It turned out she was just faking it to get his attention because she suspected him of cheating (Where would she get that idea?). When they brought her in for a psych evaluation she was surprised and said she was "exercising her First Amendment rights" which shows both her batshit craziness and her total lack of understanding of the Bill of Rights. Who knows? Maybe this is what it takes to stop him from cheating. More likely, he probably got a couple phone numbers at the psych ward because he's just that classy. Just one more reason to hate the Jets.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2501545867231674250.post-49472931764760126152012-06-16T16:28:00.000-04:002012-06-16T16:28:35.510-04:00Brandon Marshall vs. Chad Ochocinco: A Crazy-OffAs you all know, last week the Dolphins signed Chad Ochocinco. We signed him to a <a href="http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-report-chad-ochocinco-signs-1year-deal-with-miami-dolphins-20120614,0,5027103.story">pretty cheap contract </a>and at the very least, the "Will he make the team?" storyline should make Hard Knocks slightly more exciting. Nothing makes for good reality TV like good old-fashioned crazy.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now when I say crazy, I mean that in a different way than Brandon Marshall was crazy. They are both a bit nuts, but to paraphrase Super Troopers, Chad Ochocinco's shenanigans are cheeky and fun while Brandon Marshall's shenanigan's were cruel and tragic. There is no comparing their football skills because they are at much different phases of their careers, but you can definitely compare their craziness. I made this chart to try to show the similarities and differences between their mental illnesses.</div>

As a Dolphins fan, it's like finding out your child got cast as the lead in the school play but then remembering they have Tourette's; you feel excited but also a little nervous.<br />
<br />
I like Hard Knocks so much I have watched seasons with the Chiefs and Bengals, teams I could care less about, so the fact that the Dolphins are finally on it is really exciting. But then you remember we are still run by Jeff Ireland and to say our team hasn't always been the most well-run is a bit of an understatement. We got this show because everyone else declined, but we want to try to make the best of it and look good.<br />
<br />
With everything the Dolphins have to work on this offseason with a new coach who brings a whole new offense and defense, preparing for Hard Knocks should be the last thing on their minds. There are a few little things they can do that will help show them in their best light. When you want to improve as a team on the field, it's often helpful to watch film on an opponent. Off the field is no different. Here are 3 things the Dolphins can learn from when the New York Jets were on Hard Knocks to help them put their best foot forward.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Things We Can Learn From the Jets on Hard Knocks</span></b></div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b><br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">1. Memorize all your kids names</span></b><br />
Yes, I said all of them! Antonio Cromartie taught us how bad it makes you look when you struggle to remember all of your kids' names. I know it's a chore to try to remember every single one but it makes you look like I real dick if you have a hard time with it. Go home, write down your kids names and slide that sheet into your playbook. Also, you don't have to memorize all of their moms' names, but it would be nice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/jDpWzK9c25c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><span style="font-size: large;">2. No ShakeWeights</span></b>
</div>
This should go without saying, but please don't do this. There are less homoerotic ways to get in shape. At least I hope there are.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/xe0KW3DJ1rI?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">3. Be Better Than Mark Sanchez</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is kind of a broad category, but if you watched the Jets Hard Knocks season, you know what I mean. If you didn't hate Mark Sanchez before, you certainly did after. Sanchez did everything he could from lame pranks to bad jokes to generally being a whiny pussy constantly. For example:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Coach: Do you know what you need do better?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mark Sanchez: Stop sucking (Sad puppydog frown)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously we want our QB's to be better than Sanchez on the field but we need to at least be better than him off of it. Please Dolphins, if you've never been funny before, don't let this show be your first time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The news that the team is going to finally be on Hard Knocks also brings sadness because there are a lot of Dolphins I would have loved to see on the show. Here is a short list of recent ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>3 Recent Dolphins I Wish I Could Have Seen on Hard Knocks</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">1. Brandon Marshall</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Two third round picks comes nowhere near compensating us for how much fun he would have been on this show. You think the Real Housewives are crazy? He has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. From angrily punting a football to yelling at someone for no reason, he was a true wildcard. Hell, last offseason he got stabbed by his wife! That brand of crazy doesn't just grow on trees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>2. Ricky Williams</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When Ricky showed up (which was not guaranteed), he was always a great interview. Even when he says stuff I totally disagree with, like a couple weeks ago when he told Le Batard that football doesn't cause concussions, he never gives the cliche "We gave 110%. Both teams played hard." bullshit. I would have enjoyed seeing the HBO crew follow him around.</div>
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">3. Channing Crowder</span></b><br />
There has not been a Dolphin in a long time who loved the camera and microphone the way he did. You could count on him saying some dumb things, like before the Giants game in London when he said he couldn't find London on the map, but he was never boring.<br />
<br />
So that's all I got for now. I'm looking forward to a great season of Hard Knocks and hopefully a great season of football while crossing my fingers that neither embarrasses us.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2501545867231674250.post-924290616207199782012-05-06T23:09:00.004-04:002012-05-06T23:13:20.344-04:00Things Are Looking UpFor the past week, I've been in Ireland reconnecting with my rich alcoholic heritage. With my phone not working here, I've been getting news in tiny chunks. With the huge exception of the heartbreaking news about Junior Seau, I've been surprised by the good news coming out about the Miami Dolphins<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGUpdwuOnXYr13KcJNJW0jAAoeXh-2EFwl4SLmIUmupsyZr7YDlhnkJclQqiNN96fGEtXSPxj5FplD0wo_VJZjDGR2pOF4wJXHdx5TX77JRWhZ29oypcCtQokyt7HQiXvc7pSg9aWsREY/s1600/Ryan+Tannehill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGUpdwuOnXYr13KcJNJW0jAAoeXh-2EFwl4SLmIUmupsyZr7YDlhnkJclQqiNN96fGEtXSPxj5FplD0wo_VJZjDGR2pOF4wJXHdx5TX77JRWhZ29oypcCtQokyt7HQiXvc7pSg9aWsREY/s320/Ryan+Tannehill.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Ryan Tannehill is Looking Good</span></b></div>
<div>
I didn't write a post-draft analysis because there are already a ton written by people with much more football experience, but I liked our draft. You can't really know for sure about a draft until years later, but it seemed like we were picking the best guys available rather than by need. Tannehill was a pick I really liked and apparently, he impressed at his first rookie camp. It doesn't mean much, but still it's better than hearing he did terrible.</div>
<div>
<br />
<b>Here are the top 3 reasons I like the Ryan Tannehill pick.</b></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
<b>1. It gives us hope</b></div>
<div>
They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Post-Marino, we have repeatedly tried to get QB by either drafting a 2nd round QB (Beck, Henne, White) or trading 2nd round picks for them (Feely, Culpepper). While we did that, we watched Aaron Rogers and Matt Ryan slide right by. Sooner or later you have to roll the dice and I'm glad we finally did.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>2. Mike Sherman believes in him</b><br />
As I mentioned in my pre-draft post, our Offensive Coordinator was his college coach and he knows Tannehill better than anyone. If he's seen the good and the bad from Tannehill and wants to pick him 8th, I'm on board too. It also helps that the offense is similar enough that Tannehill said he already knows 80% of playbook.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3.Hot Wife</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkvaTwPQZy0Fw5RB1PvAaDVYEqNQ_nZqsx4Q0AJarHnXQDEtDgIawIi4GISqOuCO1hewALo7j_YZ1E5TJwUo_oxLNKQrxb-q-iCsby603cTOKMzFKpPL-4FD-DsV8ok2XE2jDoOTSJfz0/s1600/Lauren+Tannehill+in+a+dumb+hat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkvaTwPQZy0Fw5RB1PvAaDVYEqNQ_nZqsx4Q0AJarHnXQDEtDgIawIi4GISqOuCO1hewALo7j_YZ1E5TJwUo_oxLNKQrxb-q-iCsby603cTOKMzFKpPL-4FD-DsV8ok2XE2jDoOTSJfz0/s320/Lauren+Tannehill+in+a+dumb+hat.jpg" width="231" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hats this dumb are worn exclusively by hot chicks and/or the mentally ill</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
This has already been covered to death, but just in case you hadn't heard, Mrs. Tannehill is attractive. There is that scene in Moneyball where a scout says that an ugly girlfriend means no confidence and it would be great to think him having a hot wife somehow means something good about him, but it probably doesn't. What it does mean is that when they inevitably show her reaction shots from the crowd, it will be easier on the eyes. Generally I'm more into brunettes with curves, but with the 8th pick, you take what falls to you.<br />
<br />
The good news doesn't stop there though...</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">We Finally Paid Cameron Wake!</span></b><br />
I already wrote about this in <a href="http://www.savingthedolphins.com/2012/04/cameron-wake-needs-to-get-paid.html">this post.</a> I like that we paid him and I also like that we didn't overpay. The deal we signed has been widely viewed as a smart one and I applaud the Dolphins for making these smart move.<br />
<br />
I guess now we just patiently wait for the ransom not to arrive, because clearly Jeff Ireland has been kidnapped.<br />

For bad football teams, the draft is a time for optimism. Hope for the best but prepare for disappointment. The draft process is kind of like relationships.<br />
<br />
<b>Dating: The Pre-Draft</b><br />
We go out and try to find people we feel like we can commit to. We spend time with them and find out what their strengths are. We talk to them and try to gauge what kind of people they are. Most of them aren't perfect, they almost always come with baggage (injuries, criminal records, too many kids) . Often times we find people we like because they are good but if they could just change one or two things, they could be perfect.<br />
<br />
<b>Marriage: The Draft</b><br />
We take the information we've been given and we commit. People act happy even while some murmur "What are they doing?" but it's our decision to make and we make it.<br />
<br />
<b>Honeymoon: Post Draft Bliss</b><br />
After we choose our people we spend the time from then through the preseason trying to convince ourselves we made the right decision. As fans we comb through every training camp report looking for a sign that we've signed some future Hall of Famers.<br />
<br />
<b>Acceptance: Acceptance</b><br />
Eventually, we finally have to accept what the people actually are. You see which flaws they can grow out of and which ones are just hardwired in who they are. Since Jimmy Johnson, the Dolphins have become known for our terrible judgement. We keep going from bad marriage to bad marriage with black eyes constantly claiming our guys "can change". As you can see on the chart below, in the Ireland administration, a lot of our marriages have ended in divorce.<br />

<br />
Our most recent divorce with Phillip Merling (32nd overall pick) was just finalized last week. Some of the players on the chart may become starters by the time the season starts but the overall picture is clear. Two Pro Bowlers in 4 drafts. One was the first overall pick and the other is a kicker. Even among the starters there are just a few who seem likely to develop into stars. With all of these poor choices, Dolphins fans have become skeptical, which brings us to today. READ ON<br />

<br />
The feeling I have going into today's draft is similar to how I felt going into the 2007 draft. Just in case you forgot how it felt to have your heart ripped out, here is a passage from the very first blog post I ever wrote about the Dolphins and a couple video clips.<br />
<br />
<b>April 28, 2007</b><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><i>I was watching the draft earlier today, smiling as Brady Quinn slowly started dropping toward #9. Then it happened, Roger Goddell walked to the podium and said, "The Miami Dolphins select Ted Ginn Jr." Everyone was in disbelief; Jets fans erupted into a chant of "Miami Sucks!"(Their favorite chant when they aren't showing off their ability to spell J-E-T-S) and somewhere, Dan Marino cried a single tear.</i></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><i><br /></i></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><i>Quinn's face expressed what everyone else thought, "You've gotta be kidding me!" The Dolphin's QB coach, Terry Shea was Quinn's QB coach while he prepared for the draft, and they spent enough time with him that they must have seen something they really didn't like. Regardless, the ninth pick is way too early to be drafting an injured kick returner/#3 receiver who is completely unable to run routes because he weighs 100 pounds and can't even celebrate a touchdown without getting seriously hurt.</i></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RaYgGSHJ5hM" width="420"></iframe>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JzQh9lK5Xuk" width="420"></iframe>
</div>
<br />
Obviously, Ginn flopped and so did Quinn. Through the lens of hindsight, we know there were 23 Pro Bowlers selected after Ginn including Patrick Willis and Darrelle Revis. We were looking for a QB and we thought the answer was John Beck. In reality, there was no real answer. Of the 11 Quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft, the best may have been one that went undrafted altogether, a QB out of Oregon State named Matt Moore (It's a tossup between him and Kevin Kolb, but both teams are looking for a new QB).<br />
<br />
Even though everyone involved in that draft has been fired, it did remind me a little bit of this years draft. We are at about the same draft position (8th), we have a QB we are hoping will fall to us (Tannehill) and we have a new coach on our staff who has a special knowledge of him (Mike Sherman, our OC was his college coach).<br />
<br />
Over the past few weeks, I have been obsessively watching every bit of film on Ryan Tannehill. Through the magical mix of Youtube and my insomnia, I have watched hours of footage, literally every throw that left his hand last season. On some level I feel like I am scouting which is ridiculous considering I know almost nothing about football talent scouting. What I have been doing to Ryan Tannehill is way more like stalking.<br />
<br />
Because I don't know talent scouting, I have buried myself in every scouting report and every word written by so-called experts about Tannehill. At least 90% of what you read before a draft is third-hand information regurgitated from scouts or GMs who may just be throwing smokescreens to begin with. If the top football minds in the world (NFL GMs and scouts) are themselves often wrong more than than they are right, how much stock can you put in the opinion of Mel Kiper?<br />
<br />
What I want to hear about Tannehill is that he's a sure thing but the consensus is the opposite. He is raw. Because he played much of his college career as a receiver, he is still learning the position. I have heard people over and over say what he does right can't be taught and what he needs to learn is easy, but that's not reassuring. One of his bad habits is staring down his receivers. Remember when we drafted Chad Henne and everyone said he was great if he could just stop staring down his receivers? Then we found out Henne just loves staring down receivers. We found out it's part of who he is. We found out when he first met his wife at a party, she knew he was into her because he locked onto her with his eyes and stared her down all night from across the room (I made that up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true).<br />
<br />
In the end, all we can do is hope. I hope Tannehill is the guy we've been searching for since Marino and if he is, I hope we get him. No one knows him better than Mike Sherman so if we pass on him I could live with that. I just hope we don't waste the pick on a special teams guy, no matter how great his family is.<br />
<br />
Tonight, I'm going to live tweet through the first round of the Draft on my Twitter, @SavingThePhins so you don't have to fear Ireland's incompetence alone.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't normally write posts on Sundays, but this one felt appropriate. If you haven't already heard, Clyde Gates has recently moved into the t-shirt business. He has a line of shirts with BIM in big letters which stands for "Believe In Miami" or "Believe In Me". </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
These shirts come 2 weeks after our new coach spoke to fans on a conference call and said,<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
“Sometimes you have to have faith. There’s a little bit of the chicken and the egg here, but I’m asking you for your faith and your confidence in me that I’m going to be able to deliver the results that will make everybody in Miami proud of what this football team does on the field and off the field."<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Philbin preaches from the gospel of George Michael.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The word "faith" is a perfect word to use because faith is defined as a belief not based in proof. By that definition, all Dolphins fans already have faith. You can't be a Dolphin fan without it because all the proof the Dolphins have given us leaves faith as our only path to optimism. In fact, as a cynical atheist, my belief that the Dolphins could win the Super Bowl this season is the closest thing to real faith I've got.<br />
<br />
As followers of the Dolphins, we have all read from the Book of Shula of a team that miraculously played an entire season of football without losing a game. We've heard stories of an Isotoner Gloved savior who broke all the NFL passing records but was tragically denied a Super Bowl. These stories are great, but it feels like they happened 2000 years ago. Our faith has been tested a lot since then. We've been wondering through the NFL desert for years now. Despite making the playoffs once in the last 10 seasons and finishing 6 of the last 8 seasons under .500, every Sunday (during the season) we still come out to show our faith.<br />
<br />
To most people, that sounds like Scientology-level crazy.We have had faith in the last 7 coaches we've had in the 16 seasons since Shula. We've had faith in the 16 starting Quarterbacks in the past 12 seasons since Marino retired. Just this offseason, we had faith they'd get Manning. We had faith that they wouldn't trade away a Pro Bowl receiver for some 3rd round picks. We are holding onto faith but it's getting hard. <br />
<br />
With all this proof stacked up against the Dolphins, the only place they can go is to preach faith. They can suggest this offseason seems like a disaster but maybe it's just part of a larger master plan that we mortals can't possibly understand. Maybe our next Pro Bowl QB is waiting for us in the draft. Maybe this time really is going to be different. We believe it because we have no choice. <br />
<br />
That is why I hate Philbin asking us to have faith and Clyde Gates making those "Believe In Miami" shirts. I do believe in Miami. I have believed in Miami when I had no logical reason to do it. I've done my part just like all the Dolphins fans who have stuck with them through these hard times have. That's why those BIM shirts are bullshit. I've taken some time to draw up some better shirts for Clyde Gates and the other Dolphins players to wear. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Cameron Wake goes after quarterbacks like he watched them murder his parents as a child and he's spent his whole life plotting revenge. He is easily my favorite Dolphin. Even in 2009, when he was only used for special blitz situations, when he is on the screen, your eyes are drawn to him. He brings an intensity that is palpable. Unfortunately, that intensity is now being aimed at the Dolphins due to the fact that he is currently getting paid 1/4 the salary of our kicker.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
On one level, you have to give it to Jeff Ireland. As much as I hate him for all the dumb moves he's made, getting Wake was genius. Wake was scouted from the CFL, given the largest NFL contract ever given to a player out of the CFL (The previous high was 3 beaver pelts and NHL season tickets) and we got a Pro Bowler for chump change.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The bad news is that Cameron Wake doesn't like you calling him a chump. He does not like it one bit. So Cameron Wake is now holding out until a contract extension is reached. I almost always despise player holdouts but with Wake being 30 and currently being paid less than his backup, it's time to pay him. I know we have limited cap space and we still need to sign the rookies we draft, but there is more than one reason we need to pay Cameron Wake.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUjJszk_lPi5erF8oj8BV3xD9EDZxn0XT7tXcFEdtctPgKZSaYtEVTDG0wOYtKiyNC4AJ5rO9FI_bSV0lmUCZapIg9GHpXTXVmYGQSuPbhfqS_fP6Tyofsc2b8QYiEv3zvJLDOouVXt3I/s1600/Cameron+wake+angry+flex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUjJszk_lPi5erF8oj8BV3xD9EDZxn0XT7tXcFEdtctPgKZSaYtEVTDG0wOYtKiyNC4AJ5rO9FI_bSV0lmUCZapIg9GHpXTXVmYGQSuPbhfqS_fP6Tyofsc2b8QYiEv3zvJLDOouVXt3I/s400/Cameron+wake+angry+flex.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">An unhappy Cameron Wake puts us all in danger</span></b><br />
Cameron Wake clearly deserves a higher salary based on his play, but another prime reason to pay him is public safety. Wake has built a reputation for being a model citizen off the field and a tireless workaholic on it. He is known for being a gym-rat, often the first guy to get there and the last guy to leave. But you take away that gym and those workouts and you then have a very strong, very angry gentleman walking around South Florida. He's nice, but so is Bruce Banner before people piss him off. When he files his taxes, how long is he going to stand in line at the post office before the line of people start to look like an offensive line and the teller starts to look like Tom Brady? He seems really nice, but why test him?<br />
<br />
Hopefully we get this deal done soon. In the mean time, the holdout frees him up to do other jobs on the side. I have some suggestions.<br />
